When to Replace your Sump Pump

When to Replace your Sump Pump

A sump pump’s main goal is to take any water out of your basement and drain it away from your home. Sump pumps are great for any sort of floods that may pop up. They typically only last about 7 to 10 years. There are many signs on when they might need to be replaced.

Runs Too Much

The switch mechanism could be malfunctioning if your sump pump is running too much. The float is responsible for seeing how much water is in the pump. The float is what will tell the on/off switch to activate. If the float is not working properly it may mean it is time to replace your pump.

It is Making Odd Noises

If your sump pump is making odd noises, it could mean there are parts that are worn or damaged inside. The motor making noise generally means that there is a failed bearing. If you hear a grinding noise, that generally means the fan that pulls water into the pump is damaged.

Bent Impeller Fan

The impeller fan is the fan that pulls water into the pump in order to drain the flooding. Sometimes, debris can be pulled in along with the water, if that debris is hard enough it can bend the fan blades.

Pump is Not Used Much

While this may sound like a good thing because your basement isn’t flooding. However, it can actually reduce the lifespan of your sump pump. The best way to combat this is to regularly pour a bucket of water directly into the pump. This is also how you can test to see if it is working properly.

Runs for a Long Time

If your sump pump is running for a long time to get water out, the most likely issue is that there isn’t enough horsepower. It might be wise to find a sump pump with a higher horsepower so it can drain the water quickly. It is important that water drains quickly to prevent water damage.

Rust

Rust on your sump pump could mean that it will not work properly when you really need it. To keep your peace of mind, it is best to replace your sump pump at the first sign of rusting.

Motor Issues

There are a couple motor issues that could mean that you need to replace your whole sump pump. The motor getting stuck happens when sediment and other materials get in there. This will make the motor not work as efficiently, and make the pump not last long.

If your motor fails, there is not usually a way to replace just the motor. You generally need to replace the pump.

Final Thoughts

A sump pump generally only lasts about 10 years at max, the ideal efficient lifespan for a sump pump is about 7 years. There are not a whole lot of fixes on a pump that it would make more sense to fix rather than replace.
