How to Fix Hard Water Deposits on Your Faucet

Do you have that greenish-white build-up on all your faucets? There is a simple solution for that. Hard water occurs when there is an excess amount of minerals in the water. It can be a hassle to deal with as it causes other problems in your home but sometimes the unsightly build-up is what we want to deal with first.

Prevention

There are two ways to help prevent build-up from staying on your faucet. The first one is making sure you dry the faucet after every use. Yes, this is tedious and annoying to do after every use. However, it makes a big difference. While it does dry the faucet, it does wipe away any extra minerals that would build up.

The second thing to do is to get a whole home water filter or softener. These will eliminate any extra minerals, and sediment coming in from your water. It will not only help prevent any unsightly build-up, but it will also help prevent cloudy dishes and the other things hard water affects.

Clean Your Aerators

An aerator helps water pressure increase without actually using more water. These are usually what hold onto any sort of mineral build-up. Quickly they are easy to remove, clean, and reinstall.

First Step

The first thing is removing your aerator. This can be done by simply unscrewing the aerator from the end of your faucet. Sometimes, due to the build, it can become stuck. If that happens you may want to try a wrench. You shouldn’t need the wrench to put it back on after it’s cleaned.

Second Step

After that, you will want to remove the hard water buildup with a solution of distilled white vinegar and a little water. It’s best to let it soak for a while from an hour to three hours. It depends on how much is on there.

Third Step

While the vinegar was working its magic, it would still need to get scrubbed with a sponge. This will help any loosening of stubborn build-up. After that make sure to rinse and reinstall the aerator. You shouldn’t need a wrench if you used one before. It should just screw on.

If more than your aerator is built up or you are struggling to get the aerator off you can do these same steps but put the vinegar into a bag and tie it on to the faucet.

Final Thoughts

You may want to do this monthly or every other month to help prevent the build-up from getting too bad. If you keep up with this often you should always have sparkling faucets. Another easy way out, or if your aerator isn’t getting clean enough you can always replace it! They are generally less than 30 dollars and easily be found at your local hardware store.
