Drainage Systems 101

There are a few different types of drainage systems with all different functions. Some work best in certain areas, while others may not. Drainage systems are necessary in every structure as they help prevent water damage in the building. Here is a guide on which drainage system may be right for you.

Surface Drainage System

The first type is known as a surface drainage system. This system takes the surface water from its location and directs it through channels for proper drainage. They include drains, hollows, levees and grassed streams. They are relatively narrow ditches that act as canals. he canals should be dug parallel to each other in order to facilitate the runoff of water.

This system is a necessity in flat areas that see a lot of rain or snow. Since they are generally placed in flat areas, grading or sloping may need to be added in to let gravity work its magic.

Slope Drainage Systems

Speaking of leveraging gravity, another type of system is called a slope drainage system. These systems are designed to guide water in a downward direction away from the building. Pipes are installed in a downhill orientation to ensure proper drainage.

Subsurface Drainage Systems

Subsurface systems are also known as french drains. These subsurface systems work because they take excess water from the soil and sends it away. They are usually under the top surface soil but sometimes can be pretty far down in the soil. These drains all lead to each other and then a large drain called a collector drain.

Gutters and Downspouts

These systems are first inline to prevent stormwater damage. In a connected system the goal is to guide water from the roof to the ground, and then away from the road.
