When to Replace or Fix Your Dishwasher

When to Replace or Fix Your Dishwasher

Your dishwasher is a lifesaver. Who likes to do the dishes? However, when it is not working properly it can be a huge headache. It could be a fairly simple fix, like a clogged drainage line or it may even mean that it is time to replace your machine.

Age

The general rule of thumb is that you should replace your dishwasher every 10 years. Mainly due to the increases in efficiency of machines. Upgrading your dishwasher can mean savings on your water and electricity bills. This is not a hard and fast rule, if your dishwasher is still working perfectly fine then you may want to replace it later down the line.

Leaking Water

If you see any water on the floor after you run a cycle, you’ll want to call a plumber to come and fix it. However, if it keeps happening, then it might be worth considering an upgrade.

Under or Over Filling

Overfilling could be a cause behind the water you see all over the floor when a cycle is over. If your dishwasher is under-filling it will mean your dishes aren’t getting clean. There could be multiple problems causing this. There could be clogged lines, leaks, or mechanisms in the dishwasher that are not working properly.

Water Not Fully Draining

If there is standing water at the bottom of your dishwasher, that could signal a potential clog. Food particles get stuck in the drainage line frequently. Your trusted, local 1-Tom-Plumber should be able to fix the issue quickly.

Dishes Aren’t Hot

Dishes should always come out of the dishwasher hot. If you are emptying it shortly after the cycle has finished and they are cool to the touch, something could be wrong. If you have hot water in your kitchen sink and everywhere else in your home, then it is a sign your dishwasher needs replacing. When your dishes come out cool, those will likely need to be cleaned again. While they may look clean, hot water helps to sanitize your dishes.

Broken Latch

If the latch is broken, your dishwasher will not run. A latch can generally be replaced, however, sometimes it can keep happening. If it keeps happening it may be time to replace your machine. Over time parts can bend or warp meaning replacements will not work.

Cracks

A crack in the dishwasher can lead to leaks, sometimes those leaks are hidden. There could be a lot of water damage associated with that. It can mean replacing flooring and cabinets. Now, if the front panel has a small crack should be okay. If there are large cracks on the inside of your dishwasher that is when it is a problem. Cracks can’t be repaired, unfortunately, that means a replacement.

Weird Noises

Beyond the noises that your dishwasher normally makes, any other noise will require further inspection. Firstly, make sure that a fork or something doesn’t get loose and cause noise. If that is not the case then it is probably the motor. Motors can be expensive to repair, so it may just be better to fix them.
