Accidentally Flush an Object Down the Toilet? Try This!

On occasion, and especially with kids, accidentally flushing an object down the toilet is going to happen. But in this instance, what should you do?

No worries, I’m going to walk you through your options so you handle it in the best possible ways that you can before having to call a professional.

First, Turn off the Water

You can do this by simply turning the supply valve that’s behind that toilet until it is off. This ensures that while you are trying to retrieve it, there are no chances of water overflowing into your bathroom.

This is what a shut off valve looks like. You can find this behind your toilet.

Try to Retrieve the Object First by Using Your Hands

Of course, make sure you have gloves to do this. If the object is lodged in the trap, sometimes you’re able to reach it with your hands and pull it out. If it’s lodged any further down than that, then you’re going to have to move on to a different method.

Try Using a Drain Snake

Oftentimes, using a drain snake allows you to use the cable as the catching net and pull the object back up through the drain into the toilet bowl. For the most part, you have a good chance of getting this method to successfully work.

While you can find most drain snakes at hardware stores, make sure you are picking up the right one to use for this kind of situation. There is a difference between a drain snake that helps retrieve items rather than one that helps break up a clog.

Here is a great example of what a manual drain snake looks like. There are also automatic drain snakes. This could work for retrieving an object in the toilet.

Use a Wet/Dry Vacuum

Using a wet/dry vacuum can help you suck out the object that’s in your toilet. The force of the suction can be the solution to pulling that object back up and out of your toilet. If you don’t already have a wet/dry vacuum on hand, you can also find these at your local hardware stores.

Use a Plunger

Lastly, if no other source is solving the problem for you, you can try using a plunger. A plunger can create a suction force to bring the object back up to the toilet bowl.

I would advise you to be careful choosing this option. Oftentimes, pushing down on a plunger before pulling back up can push the object deeper into your toilet drain. Therefore, this would cause you to almost have to call a professional if no other method is working for you.

Make sure you have a plunger with a flange. This one is designed specifically for toilets. This will allow you to get better suction and hopefully brings the object back up to the toilet bowl.
