Five Plumbing Tools Every Homeowner Needs

It is important to have a wide array of tools in case disaster strikes or you are wanting to spruce things up in your home. It is important not to forget plumbing tools in the mix.  If you are a new homeowner, or looking to build your tool kit then you might want to consider adding these five tools in your arsenal.

Plunger

Plungers are a great plumbing tools

Our personal favorite plumbing tool is a plunger (especially if it’s pink). A plunger is a necessity in every bathroom but did you know there is more than one type of plunger? A toilet plunger has a flange on the bottom, this helps create a seal so that the clog is able to be released. A sink plunger has a flat bottom which helps connect with the bottom of a sink.

Drain Snake

drain snakes are very versitale plumbing tools

A drain snake is a handy tool to have if your plunger just isn’t cutting it. While it may be on the pricier side, it is a versatile tool. A drain snake, or auger, can be used in bathtub drains, sink drains and toilets. They are better at getting out bigger clogs than a plunger is.

We really only suggest you use this if you have the experience with them. They can be a little hard to wield. If you are going to use one, we encourage you to wear protective eyewear and have work gloves on.

Plumber’s Tape

thread tape helps create a water tight seal

This tape is also known as thread tape or teflon tape. Plumber’s tape is duct tape for plumbing. It can be used to temporarily stop a leak, or help create a watertight seal between two threaded fittings. If you are using it to stop a leak, it’s best to wrap the tape around the pipe a few times to ensure the water is held back.

Wrenches

pipe wrenches

A pipe wrench is one of the more common tools people think of when they think of a plumber’s tool box. The tool tightens or loosens pipes. If you notice the pipe underneath your sink is leaking, it may be worth it to tighten it quickly. This pipe wrench will scratch any finishes, so you may also want to have a crescent wrench on hand. It is pretty much the same as a pipe wrench but it doesn’t have any teeth.

PPE

PPE

PPE stands for personal protective equipment. This can include hand, eye, and head protection, as well as masks. We highly recommend you put on PPE if working on any plumbing in your own home. Even if you think you might not, it’s better to be safe than sorry.

Final Thoughts

These tools can also be used in other applications you may need around your home. Most of them can be quite versatile in their usages. Plumber’s tape can be used instead of other types of tape in a pinch. Pipe wrenches can be used on other things that are not pipes if you need to tighten anything.
