Why Are Drain Flanges so Important?

Without drain flanges, it will be really difficult to use any drain in your home without causing water damage. Although it’s something that many of us don’t think about when using water in our home, these are crucial to the proper functionality of the water supply in your home.

What is a Drain Flange?

A drain flange is a seal that prevents your sinks, tubs, and toilets from leaking when the water supply is in use.

Tub/Shower Flange

First, we have a tub or shower flange. Most of the time, it is the rubber gasket that deteriorates over time and needs to be replaced. The gasket sits in between the drain itself and the flange to create a tight seal so that no water leaks through. Don’t forget about the plumber’s putty underneath the lip of the flange.

Toilet Flange

Next, a toilet flange. This sits under the base of your toilet and aligns with the drain in the floor. This creates a seal for your toilet so water is unable to leak through the base – potentially causing water damage to your floor.

If you find that you can see water coming from the base of your toilet, you likely need your toilet reset by replacing the flange. A common reason for your toilet leaking at the base is because of a wobbly toilet.

Sink Flange

Lastly, we have a sink flange. If the seam around your drain basket deteriorates, that will cause water to leak through into your cabinetry. If this isn’t taken care of, it could cause severe water damage over time and even mold.

Mold starts to grow within 24 – 48 hours of water exposure – especially in a dark place like cabinetry.

Final Thoughts

The main reason why any drain flange needs to be replaced is because they wear over time and the seam will start to deteriorate. Luckily, they’re easy to replace and don’t cost much.
