Types of Showers (Which One Best Suits You?)

Having the option of 16 different types of showers is a lot to consider! Are you aware of which one would supply you with the utmost convenience? It could be the most basic type of shower or maybe it is a type of shower that comes with more bells and whistles than the basic type of shower setup.

Let’s go through the different types of showers that are out there so you can determine which one is best for you:

Bathtub/Shower Combo

A bathroom with a bathtub already has the plumbing that is necessary for a shower. It makes sense why these became so popular and convenient for almost everyone. There’s really no required modification needed besides installing a faucet to divert the water from the tub spout to the shower head. You will also need a shower curtain that hangs inside of the tub so the water hits the tub only and not the rest of the bathroom.

The most common setup, yet one of the most convenient. This bathtub/shower combo has all of the necessary plumbing needed.

Custom Shower

Custom showers are exactly what they sound like. You can customize your shower space to your liking. Keep in mind, there is a minimum floor space amount of 30 inches square – 36 inches square to be ADA compliant. Custom showers are built from scratch and can be made to fit in odd spaces in your bathroom with the right materials.

Prefabricated Shower

Prefabricated showers come from a supplier in which it’s ready to be dropped into a pre-framed alcove. Homeowners will often choose this type of shower when they are on a budget or don’t want to spend a lot of time on the construction. Most of these types of showers are made out of molded fiberglass or acrylic.

Stand-Up Shower

A stand-up shower is also known as a free standing shower. The great thing about this type of shower is that it requires no framing. You can set one anywhere you can install a drain and water supply plumbing.

Walk-In Shower

Walk-in showers are unique because you can walk right into them without any obstacles. These are convenient for the disabled or senior citizens. This type of shower is mandatory to have a waterproof bathroom floor because the shower meets the shower pan at the same level.

Corner Shower

A corner shower could be ideal for you if you are looking to save space in your bathroom. Corner showers are unique because they look very different from what the most common bathtub/shower combo looks like.

Neo-Angle Shower

A neo-angle shower is also built into the corner of a bathroom, but is built with 3 glass panels instead of 2, like the corner shower. Two panels meet along the back walls and the third panel accommodates the door. This type of shower complements a higher-end bathroom design. It results in a polygon shape rather than a square shape which resembles a corner shower. You can also install a curved enclosure to this type of shower, which would also require a curved shower pan.

Rectangular Shower

This shower offers you more room to move around than a square one. It is beneficial to people in wheelchairs. It also allows more room to move in and out of the water when needed.

Waterfall Shower

A waterfall shower head can be installed in any type of shower stall. The shower head itself is supposed to resemble if you were standing under a waterfall.

This shower head is more modern than most, but closely resembles a waterfall.

Rainfall Shower

This type of shower does not conserve water. If that is a concern of yours, stay away from this type of shower. It is called the rainfall shower because the water flow resembles that of a rain shower.

Steam Shower

A steam shower consists of a steam generator and a moisture-sealed enclosure. This one needs professional installation. This is because of the issues that steam can cause to the rest of the bathroom if it gets out of the enclosure.

Body Shower

A body shower is a shower that consists of multiple shower heads on different shower walls. You can immerse your entire body in water at once.

Shower Tower

A shower tower incorporates a showerhead, faucet controls, and body jets. It eliminates the need to cut into the wall to install a conventional shower faucet because it only requires hot and cold supply lines.

On-Demand Shower

These types of showers are popular in Europe where they’re also called electric showers. They consist of an electric water heater with an attached shower head to the wall. These conserve water and electricity, which is why they are popular.

Smart Shower

A smart shower is exactly what it sounds like. You can set your preferred water temperature, flow rate, and shower duration from a central control panel.

Solar Shower

In order to use a solar shower, you need to hook it up to a garden hose and fill up the reservoir. That can be anything from a bag that you hang in a tree or a black cylinder that encloses the shower stand. You then have to wait for the sun to heat up the water and use the mixing controls to take a warm shower outside.
