How To Install A New Toilet Seat

Installing a new toilet seat can be done by almost anyone. It is an easy task. By following a few simple steps, you will have a new toilet seat installed in no time.

Let’s go step-by-step on this and see if it is easy to install a new toilet seat by yourself.

The Installation Process

Step 1. Find the Correct Measurements For a New Toilet Seat

First and foremost, you need to measure the toilet you have now so you know what size toilet seat will fit the bowl. There are a few things that need to be measured. First, you need to measure the distance between the bolts that are near the top of the toilet seat.

Then, you have to measure the width. Lastly, you need to measure the length of the bowl from the top, where the bolts are, to the front of the bowl around the outer edge.

Depending on your measurements, paying close attention to a new toilet seat that matches those is quite important.

Step 2. Choose the New Toilet Seat You Want

The next step is to choose your new toilet seat based on your correct measurements. Toilets contain several different materials but the most common are high-impact plastic or have a plastic coating over wood. You can get a seat that prevents itself from slamming shut which can be a great benefit in your home. Seat shapes are generally standard, although there are seats that are elongated.

Raised toilet seats or heated seats more than likely require special installation so that would be something you would have to look into separately from a standard toilet seat.

There are many different toilet seats to choose from. It really comes down to your preference when choosing a new toilet seat as long as the toilet seat follows the correct measurements.

Step 3. Remove the Old Toilet Seat in Preparation For the New One

The next step is removing your old toilet seat. You need to take off the seat bolts so you can get the old seat cover off. The nuts, bolts and washers will need to be screwed off from the toilet. Once you remove those, you should be able to lift the old seat off along with its hinges from the toilet.

Step 4. Align the New Toilet Seat Into the Correct Position

This step is pretty straightforward. All you need to do is get your new toilet seat and align it correctly onto the toilet itself. Make sure you are aligning it to where the new seat hinges are over the holes where the bolts will go.

Step 5. Attach the New Toilet Seat

To properly attach the new toilet seat, the bolts go through each hinge and then into the toilet bowl. The head of the bolt stays on top. Then, attach the nuts to the other end of the bolts and tighten them. If you do have washers, you can put them onto the bolts before the nuts. Sometimes the hinges will have plastic covers – if they do, you just need to snap them in place.

Once you make sure that it is secure, you are finished with the installment!
